From Building Confidence to Grade 9: How Atharva Transformed His Science Learning

The Challenge

When Atharva started, Science was not only about understanding concepts — it was also about helping him become more comfortable with the learning process.

He could sometimes find it difficult to stay engaged during repetitive activities, and when something did not go as expected, he could become overwhelmed. This meant that building a positive and trusting learning environment was just as important as strengthening his academic understanding.

The goal was to help Atharva become more confident with Science, develop effective learning habits, and gradually take greater ownership of his preparation.

Student: Atharva

Grade: 8

Curriculum: British

Subject: Science

Tutor: Manvee Parik

Initial Performance: Grade 6

Current Performance: Grade 9

The Tailor-Made Approach

Atharva’s learning followed a highly personalised approach built around patience, consistency, active recall, and confidence-building.

Building trust through patience. When Atharva needed additional time to express himself or process a concept, he was given that space without being rushed. A calm and supportive environment helped him become more comfortable participating in sessions.

Turning corrections into opportunities. Instead of focusing on whether an answer was right or wrong, corrections were framed positively. This helped Atharva see feedback as an opportunity to improve rather than something to be worried about.

Making Science interactive. Games, simulations, mnemonic techniques, and carefully selected videos were incorporated into sessions to keep learning engaging and maintain his interest.

Active recall and “Flip the Class.” After learning a small portion of a topic, Atharva was encouraged to explain it back in his own words. At times, he took on the role of the teacher and taught the concept back to his tutor, reinforcing his understanding while building confidence.

Building exam confidence. Regular assessments were introduced gradually and referred to as “Quick Assessments” to make them feel more approachable. His answers were reviewed carefully, with a focus on curriculum-specific keywords and stronger answer-writing techniques.

Supporting independent revision. Pictorial notes were created specifically for Atharva, giving him a visual and structured way to revisit concepts independently.

The Result

Atharva improved his Science performance from Grade 6 to Grade 9, showing remarkable progress in both his academic understanding and confidence.

He gradually became more comfortable with assessments, accepted feedback positively, revised more regularly, and began pushing himself beyond what he initially believed he could achieve.

Habits That Helped Atharva Get There

Atharva’s progress was driven by consistency, trust, and a willingness to keep trying.

  • Active recall — regularly explaining concepts in his own words strengthened his understanding and retention.
  • Interactive learning — games, simulations, and visual resources helped him stay engaged.
  • Regular revision — revisiting concepts consistently helped strengthen his long-term understanding.
  • Positive approach to feedback — constructive corrections helped him become more comfortable improving his answers.
  • Confidence through achievement — celebrating small milestones helped him recognise his own progress.
  • Independent learning — pictorial notes and regular practice helped him take greater ownership of his preparation.

Looking Ahead

Atharva’s journey from Grade 6 to Grade 9 is about more than an improvement in Science performance. It reflects the confidence, trust, and consistency he developed along the way.

By creating a learning environment where he felt supported, giving him strategies that suited his learning style, and encouraging him to take an active role in his own learning, Atharva gradually became a more confident and independent learner.

His journey is a reminder that when students are given patience, trust, the right strategies, and the confidence to keep trying, they can achieve far more than they initially believe possible.
