From Building Foundations to Greater Confidence: Malik’s Mathematics Journey

written by
Subhasini Kafle

The Challenge

When Malik joined Mentor Match, he faced challenges across several areas of Mathematics. His foundational concepts needed strengthening, and he lacked confidence when approaching questions independently.

He also found it difficult to apply concepts to unfamiliar problems and understand exactly what certain questions were asking. Accuracy and careless mistakes were additional areas that affected his performance.

The focus was therefore not simply on completing the syllabus, but on helping Malik build a stronger conceptual foundation and become more confident in applying what he had learned.

Tutor: Subhasini Kafle

Classes per Week: 2

Duration with Mentor Match: 4 months

The Approach

Strengthening the fundamentals. The first focus was on building Malik’s foundational understanding so that he could approach more advanced questions with greater clarity.

Step-by-step learning. Concepts and problems were broken down into manageable steps, helping Malik understand the reasoning behind each solution rather than simply following a procedure.

Regular practice and revision. Consistent practice and regular revision were used to reinforce concepts and strengthen his understanding.

Active recall. Previously taught concepts were revisited through active recall, helping Malik retain information and retrieve it more confidently.

Developing exam technique. Attention was also given to exam keywords and techniques so that Malik could communicate his understanding more effectively.

Personalised support. Worksheets and practice were tailored to his areas of difficulty, allowing the learning process to focus specifically on his individual needs.

The Result

Malik has shown improvement across multiple areas, including academic performance, conceptual understanding, confidence, problem-solving, accuracy, speed, exam technique, independent learning, participation, and consistency.

What Made the Difference

  • Personalised teaching helped address Malik’s specific learning gaps.
  • Regular revision strengthened his conceptual understanding and retention.
  • Growing confidence helped him approach Mathematics with greater independence.
  • Tutor-student collaboration created a consistent and supportive learning environment.
  • Parent support played an important role in maintaining consistency and encouraging his progress.

“Consistent parent support was what encouraged me as a tutor.” — Subhasini Kafle, Malik’s Tutor

Looking Ahead

Malik’s journey shows the value of combining personalised teaching, consistent revision, and confidence-building. With his foundations becoming stronger and his confidence continuing to grow, he is in a better position to approach Mathematics more independently and continue progressing beyond expectations.
