When Ola joined Mentor Match, her biggest challenge was not just Mathematics itself — it was her lack of confidence in the subject. She initially scored around 54–56%, and the parent’s primary goal was simply to help her pass her examinations.
Ola had a good ability to work quickly with a calculator but was comparatively weak in mental mathematics. Since calculators are permitted in IGCSE examinations, this became an opportunity to turn an existing strength into an effective exam strategy.
Building strong foundations. The first focus was on strengthening Ola’s basic Mathematics concepts rather than rushing through the syllabus. This helped her develop a more secure understanding of the fundamentals.
Turning a weakness into a strength. Ola struggled with mental mathematics but was very quick and comfortable using a calculator. Her preparation therefore included practical strategies for making the most effective use of her calculator during IGCSE-style questions.
Learning to recheck answers. She was taught calculator techniques that helped her verify answers and reduce avoidable mistakes during examinations.
Gradual progression. As her understanding and confidence improved, Ola moved from foundational practice towards more challenging questions.
Independent exam practice. She began working consistently through past-year papers and practising from textbooks, allowing her to become more familiar with examination-style questions.
Ola improved from an initial 54–56% to 70% after her first term, and ultimately achieved an impressive 90% by the end of the school year.
Her progress was particularly significant because she had initially been among the weaker students in her class. Through consistent effort, stronger foundations, and regular exam practice, she was able to make a substantial improvement.
“From building on basics and being in the weakest class of her class, Ola has improved a lot. She is working very hard doing past-year papers and practising from books, which is evident from her result.” — Chahat Goel, Ola’s Tutor
Ola’s journey from 54–56% to 90% is a strong example of how personalised support, consistent practice, and the right exam strategies can transform both performance and confidence.
