Rayan and his parents initially came to the sessions feeling disappointed with his Mathematics performance after receiving a C-.
However, the focus was not on the grade itself. Rayan had the ability to do well, but he needed to rebuild his confidence and recognise his own strengths.
With limited time before his final examination and several complex topics to cover, the goal was to help him strengthen his fundamentals while developing the confidence to approach challenging problems independently.
Rayan's preparation followed a personalised approach focused on confidence, conceptual understanding, and independent problem-solving.
Foundations first. The preparation began with the basics, ensuring Rayan had a strong understanding of the concepts before moving into more advanced topics.
Building confidence through practice. Across several focused sessions, Rayan worked through problems repeatedly until he became comfortable approaching them independently.
Mathematics through logic. A key focus was helping Rayan understand that Mathematics is about logic and reasoning rather than memorisation. He embraced this idea and began approaching challenging questions as problems he could work through himself.
Gradually reducing support. As Rayan's understanding developed, the level of guidance was reduced. He increasingly took ownership of his solutions and began actively asking to solve complex questions independently.
Learning through connection. A strong tutor-student rapport also played an important role. Their shared love for the Golden State Warriors helped create a comfortable learning environment where Rayan could engage openly and confidently.
The Result
Rayan began his preparation after scoring a C- in Mathematics, feeling discouraged about his performance. With a short preparation window, he worked through challenging topics including logarithmic and exponential functions and rational functions.
Through a focus on strong fundamentals, personalised support, and gradually increasing independence, Rayan became significantly more confident in solving complex Mathematics problems on his own.
"I was sure that Rayan could do well if he regained his confidence. Over time, he started solving questions independently and eventually began telling me not to help him because he wanted to figure out the complex solutions himself." — Vivek Vishwanath, Rayan's Tutor

The preparation worked because Rayan gradually shifted from seeking reassurance to trusting his own ability.
Rayan's journey is a reminder that sometimes the biggest step towards academic improvement is believing that you are capable of improving.
From beginning with a C- and low confidence, Rayan gradually reached a point where he wanted to solve complex problems on his own and would tell his tutor, "Don't help me, I'll figure it out."
That growing independence became one of the most meaningful outcomes of his preparation — not just becoming better at Mathematics, but learning to trust his own ability to solve it.
