From Nervousness to A Grades: How Sophia Built Confidence in Maths and Science

The Challenge

When Sophia started her journey with Mentor Match, she had strong potential, but nervousness often got in the way of showing what she was capable of. This sometimes led to silly mistakes and basic conceptual errors, particularly when she lacked confidence in her own answers.

The focus was therefore not only on improving her academic understanding, but also on helping her become more confident and independent in the way she approached questions.

Student: Sophia

Grade: 8 / Year 9

Curriculum: British

Subject: Maths & Science

Tutor: Devesh Chandra Sati

Classes per Week: 2

The Approach

Building confidence through participation. Sophia was encouraged to take the lead in solving questions rather than relying on the tutor to guide every step. This helped her become more comfortable trusting her own thinking.

Learning to check her own work. A key part of the preparation was teaching Sophia to review and verify her answers independently. This helped reduce careless mistakes and strengthened her accuracy.

Strengthening conceptual understanding. Alongside confidence-building, the focus remained on addressing basic conceptual errors so that she could approach questions with greater clarity.

Consistent effort. Sophia remained dedicated throughout the process and continued to put in the effort required to improve.

Working together. The combination of personalised support, practice, and Sophia’s willingness to take responsibility for her learning helped her make meaningful progress.

The Result

By Term 3, Sophia achieved an A in Maths and a B in Science, reflecting clear progress across both subjects.

Her tutor highlighted that her dedication, spirit, and the consistent work done together played a major role in this improvement.

“Sophia always had latent potential hidden under her nervousness. Her constant dedication and spirit along with our hard work together led to this improvement.” Devesh Chandra Sati , Sophia’s Tutor
