And that's precisely the problem: available and reputable aren't the same thing.

1. Proven IB-specific expertise. The tutor has taught, examined or scored highly in your child's exact subject and level, not just "science" or "maths" in general.
2. Assessment know-how. They teach from past papers and mark schemes, and they understand that the diploma is scored out of 45: six subjects graded 1 to 7, plus up to 3 points from TOK and the Extended Essay.
3. A diagnostic before a plan. Good tutoring starts by pinpointing your child's exact gaps, not by opening chapter one.

The loudest red flag is a "guaranteed 7" or a "guaranteed 45."

No tutor can control how your child performs on exam day or where the grade boundaries fall. So, a guarantee is really selling reassurance, not results. 

A trustworthy tutor will talk about the specific gaps they can help close and how they’ll measure progress. But overpromising is nowhere near as dangerous as the next one.

Be very cautious of anyone offering to write or heavily edit an Internal Assessment, Extended Essay or TOK essay. Under IB rules, submitting work produced by a third party could cost the student the grade for that subject. In the case of the Extended Essay, it could even mean losing eligibility for the IB Diploma.

That’s a steep price to pay for a so-called writing service.

Another warning sign- Vague credentials. 

Be wary of claims like “expert faculty” when there are no names, subjects or track records to back them up. The same goes for anyone claiming to be “official” or “IB-approved.”
