IB Maths 2027 Shake-Up: What’s Changing for AA & AI Students?

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is updating its Diploma Programme (DP) Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) and Applications and Interpretation (AI) courses for 2027. The revisions include selected syllabus removals, changes to examination marks and a revised approach to internal assessment.

For students preparing for the IB Diploma Programme and parents planning academic support, understanding these updates early can help make preparation more focused.

Key Dates for the Updated IB Maths Curriculum

  • February 2027: Launch of the new Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches course.
  • August 2027: First teaching of the revised mathematics courses.
  • May 2029: First assessment of the updated courses.
  • August/September 2029: First university enrolment following the new assessment cycle.

The IB describes the revisions as a refinement of the existing courses, with selected content removed rather than new content added. The current courses have their final assessment in November 2028.

What Is Changing in IB Maths AA and AI?

The two mathematics pathways continue to serve different learning needs. AA focuses more on mathematical reasoning, algebra, abstract thinking, functions and calculus. AI places greater emphasis on mathematical modelling, statistics, practical applications and technology.

The updated courses retain these broad distinctions while reducing selected syllabus content.

Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA)

Level Topics removed
AA SL Financial applications; bivariate data
AA HL Financial applications; proof by counterexample; bivariate data; Euler’s method

Mathematics: Applications and Interpretation (AI)

Level Topics removed
AI SL Logarithms; approximation of areas using the trapezoidal rule
AI HL Complex numbers; vector product; Poisson distribution; hypothesis tests for the population mean of a normal distribution; population mean of a Poisson distribution; correlation coefficient

These changes do not mean students can assume the entire syllabus will be easier. They still need to understand the applicable course requirements, practise problem-solving and develop confidence with the topics that remain.

IB Maths Exam Pattern Changes for 2029

The overall external assessment model remains largely unchanged, but the number of marks and the duration of Paper 3 at Higher Level will change.

Assessment Updated format Previous format
SL Papers 1 and 2 combined 75 marks 80 marks
HL Papers 1 and 2 combined 100 marks 110 marks
HL Paper 3 50 marks 55 marks
HL Paper 3 duration 1 hour 1 hour 15 minutes

Students should use the updated subject briefs when planning their preparation. Practising with older papers can still support skill development, but students should check the assessment format and syllabus relevance before using them as a guide for the 2029 examinations.

What Is Changing in the Internal Assessment?

The mathematical exploration remains the main internal assessment task. However, SL and HL will use the same assessment criteria, revised to reflect the IB’s mathematical inquiry process.

Criterion Marks What it assesses
A: Problem specification 4 The problem in context and desired outcomes
B: Abstraction 6 Assumptions, selected techniques and tools, and mathematical form
C: Computation 4 Calculations and mathematical communication
D: Interpretation 6 Interpreting results, evaluating outcomes and refining the work

This structure places emphasis on more than obtaining a numerical answer. Students need to define a mathematical problem, choose appropriate methods, carry out calculations and explain whether their results address the original question.

What Do These Changes Mean for Students and Parents?

The updated curriculum places continued importance on reasoning, clear mathematical communication and interpreting results in context. Students will also need to choose suitable methods and tools, work through calculations and evaluate the accuracy and relevance of their findings.

Parents can support preparation by checking which syllabus applies to their child’s examination session, reviewing the appropriate subject brief and encouraging regular practice rather than relying solely on last-minute revision.

For students who find particular concepts difficult, identifying gaps early can help them build a more manageable study plan.

At Mentor Match, IB tutoring offers one-to-one support tailored to a student's subject, SL/HL level and learning goals. Students can also meet the tutors to learn more about the teaching team. Teaching starts at the student's true level, with learning support tailored to their needs.
