77.32% of parents see better grades in 3 months!

This is the 1st choice in your school life that a university admissions team will read line by line. Every subject and every predicted grade from the next 2 years goes straight onto the application.

That is why so many parents in India and the UAE ask, “Do universities prefer IB or A Level?” and, right after it, “Is IB good for UAE or Indian students?” Both questions have clearer answers than most school open days suggest.

So let's start where the decision ends up - the offer letter.

Do Universities Prefer IB or A Level?

Neither.

And the offer letters prove it.

Top universities write one offer for A Level students and a separate one for IB students, both pitched at the same standard.

Take Cambridge Medicine. The minimum offer is A*A*A at A Level, or 41–42 points with 776 at HL for IB students. Either way, Chemistry is compulsory, at A Level or at IB Higher Level.

Oxford says most of its applicants hold A Levels, but it accepts equivalent qualifications and lists the IB requirement on every course page.

UCAS goes a step further and maps the grades directly. An IB Higher Level 7 is treated as equivalent to an A Level A*, and a Higher Level 3 to an E.

So the preference shows up in the subjects your child picks, not the name on the certificate. And that is where the two routes really start to pull apart.

IB vs A Level: How the Two Are Built

The IB Diploma keeps 6 subjects going for two years plus a compulsory core, while A Levels let your child narrow down to the three or four subjects they actually need.

Here's how they line up side by side:

Exam Feature IB Diploma Programme Cambridge International AS & A Level
Subjects 6 subjects, one from each subject group; 3 or 4 at Higher Level. Usually 4 subjects at AS Level and 3 at A Level, in almost any combination.
Compulsory Core Theory of Knowledge (TOK), Extended Essay (EE), and Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS). No compulsory core component.
Structure One integrated two-year programme. AS Level in Year 1 followed by A Level in Year 2, or all papers taken at the end.
Grading Grades 1–7 per subject, with a maximum of 45 diploma points; 24 points are generally required to earn the diploma, subject to additional requirements. A* to E for A Level; A to E for AS Level.

So, is IB harder than A Levels?

Honestly, it depends on what your child is good at.

A strong all-rounder often enjoys keeping 6 subjects alive. A student who already knows they want Engineering may prefer putting all their time into Maths, Further Maths and Physics.

For families planning a degree in India- there's one more set of questions worth answering before you decide…

Is IB Good for UAE and Indian Students?

Yes, as long as you plan for 3 things the IB brochure won't spell out for a UAE or an Indian admission.

  • Recognition: the Association of Indian Universities (AIU) has recognised the IB Diploma since 1983, according to the IB. Some universities still ask for an AIU equivalence certificate, so build that paperwork into your timeline.
  • Timing: most Indian universities finish admissions by the end of June, but IB results arrive in early July. Many universities work around this with provisional admission based on predicted grades, which makes those predictions far more important than parents expect.
  • Subject choice: studying medicine in India requires Physics, Chemistry and Biology, so those choices need to be made at 16, not at 18.

A Level students have one quiet advantage here.

Cambridge runs a March exam series for schools in India in selected subjects, timed so results can reach Indian admissions deadlines.

Schools in the UAE sit the June and November series instead, so Indian families there face the same timing squeeze as IB students.

Entrance exams such as NEET and JEE have their own eligibility rules and syllabus, so check the current NTA information bulletin before your child picks subjects.

Whichever route you choose, the grades that matter most are the ones predicted in the first year.

So the next question most parents ask is where to find support before those predictions are locked in.

Can I Find IB and A Level Tutoring in the UAE and India?

Yes, and the smartest time to look isn't the panicked month before final exams.

Predicted grades are usually set from first-year work and mocks, so a shaky HL Chemistry topic or a weak A Level Maths paper can cost an offer before the real exams even start.

Spot those gaps early, and your child walks into the application season with grades that actually reflect what they can do.

MentorMatch offers personalised 1:1 online tutoring for IB Diploma and A Level students across the UAE and India, with vetted tutors.

Every student starts with a diagnostic test that names the exact gaps.

From there, a vetted tutor:

  • works to your child's actual board, syllabus and level (HL or SL, AS or A Level)
  • builds the question technique each exam rewards, from command words to how marks are allocated
  • runs a mastery check of 3 exam-style questions every session
  • sets 1 proctored mock exam a month, so the evidence is there before predicted grades are set
  • sends report cards, so you can follow the trend week by week through the term
