IGCSE Literature 2028: Easier Exams or a New Challenge?
Cambridge IGCSE Literature in English (0992) introduces important syllabus changes for the 2028–2030 examination years. Both examined papers will become open-text exams, Paper 1 prose questions are changing, and the optional coursework route has been revised.
Will having the text in the exam room make Literature easier? Not necessarily. Students will still need to interpret texts, build arguments and support their ideas with relevant evidence.
Here’s what students and parents need to know.
What Is Changing in Cambridge IGCSE Literature 2028?
1. Both Exam Papers Become Open-Text
Paper 1 and Paper 2 will allow students to refer to permitted texts during the examination. Highlighting, underlining and brief handwritten notes are subject to Cambridge’s rules.
Students should check the official 2028–2030 syllabus for the full requirements. Open-text exams still require close reading and thoughtful analysis.
2. Paper 1 Prose Questions Change
Paper 1: Poetry and Prose is compulsory and worth 50% of the qualification. Prose questions will move from passage-based questions to discursive essay questions, while poetry question styles remain unchanged.
Students should practise exploring themes and connections across a text, rather than relying on plot summaries. The revised syllabus provides the official update.
3. Paper 2 Combines Drama and Unseen
Students taking the examined route will also sit Paper 2: Drama and Unseen, worth 50% of the qualification. They must answer one Drama question and one Unseen question in the same paper. The revised syllabus also includes a range of international set-text options across different authors, backgrounds and historical periods.
4. Optional Coursework Has a New Structure
Students can choose Component 3: Coursework instead of Paper 2. It is worth 50% of the qualification and includes two essays:
- Comparing texts — 30 marks
- Comparing poems — 20 marks
The coursework option allows students to explore texts selected with their teachers and develop extended essay-writing skills. Check the official Cambridge syllabus page for the full syllabus details.
What Else Has Changed?
Cambridge has updated syllabus content and some set texts, revised marking criteria across components, and updated learning aims, learner attributes and assessment wording. The set-text choices include seven prose texts and five Drama options, including one Shakespeare play.
Important: Cambridge IGCSE Literature 0992 is available only in a limited number of administrative zones. Confirm availability and the correct syllabus with your school. Cambridge states that 0992 is graded from 9 to 1 and is otherwise the same as IGCSE Literature in English (0475).
Does Open-Text Mean an Easier Literature Exam?
Not necessarily. Having the text available can help students locate evidence, but it does not replace analysis. Students still need to explain how writers use language, develop themes and create meaning.
Preparation should focus on understanding set texts, planning clear arguments, selecting relevant evidence and practising timed essays.
