The College Board has revised the AP Statistics syllabus for 2026–27, changing course content, unit structure and the exam format. Students taking the May 2027 AP Statistics Exam will complete both multiple-choice and free-response sections digitally through Bluebook.
For students preparing for AP exams, understanding these changes early helps them use the right syllabus and practise the correct question formats.
What Has Changed in the AP Statistics Syllabus for 2026–27?
The revised AP Statistics course aligns more closely with introductory college statistics and emphasises statistical problem-solving.
The key syllabus changes are:
- Algebra prerequisite: The second-year algebra prerequisite has been removed. Students who have successfully completed first-year algebra can take AP Statistics.
- New content: Topics involving investigative questions have been added.
- Five-unit structure: The previous Units 1–8 have been consolidated into five units.
- Removed topics: Analysing departures from linearity (2.9), combining random variables (4.9), the geometric distribution (4.12), chi-square goodness-of-fit tests (8.2 and 8.3), and the former Unit 9 on inference for quantitative data—slopes.
The revisions take effect in the 2026–27 school year.
For the complete official topic list, refer to the College Board’s AP Statistics revision guide and its revised Course and Exam Description.
AP Statistics Exam 2027: What Is the New Format?
The May 2027 AP Statistics Exam will be fully digital. Students will complete the entire exam in Bluebook; paper free-response booklets will no longer be used.
The four free-response questions assess formulating questions and collecting data, analysing data and interpreting results, statistical inference, and applying multiple statistical practices across course content.
What Should Students Know About Bluebook Testing?
Students will enter all responses in Bluebook, including statistical notation in free-response answers. The digital exam supports the built-in Desmos graphing calculator, and students may also use an approved handheld graphing calculator.
Students will receive scratch paper for planning and calculations. A printed reference information booklet will also be provided, with reference information available digitally in Bluebook.
The College Board has made a new practice exam available through AP Classroom and will update additional resources during the 2026–27 school year. Students should also review the official AP Statistics exam information and practise entering statistical notation digitally.
How Should Students Prepare for AP Statistics 2027?
Preparation should reflect the revised syllabus and the fully digital format—not just older practice papers.
Students should review all five units, practise interpreting data and statistical results, and develop clear explanations for free-response questions. They should also become familiar with Bluebook and practise entering statistical notation before exam day.
