There are multiple questions that we simply don’t have concrete answers to: the chicken or the egg, nature versus nurture… Science or the Humanities? We’re not here to start a war over that last one, but to analyze why Humanities is gaining more importance and weight in our world. Why are the Arts so important in today’s globalized and rapidly advancing world?
STEM subjects and disciplines are essential tools we use to create various things, processes, products, and protocols. It makes our lives far, far easier, but it's the arts and humanities that makes our lives more diverse and colorful. Imagine a world without music, art and entertainment, or a world where we don’t understand and appreciate different cultures and people and food. Sounds dysfunctional and robotic, right? (No offense to the robots that might eventually take over the world!)
More than that, though, STEM and Humanities are disciplines that help each other thrive. As technology grows, so does our need for a humanities-based understanding of the tech. Take AI, for example! It’s a wonderful creation that already is, and will continue to make life easier for us—but it also has dozens of flaws, like biases in how it gathers information (look it up!). It’s only when we consider AI from a human perspective that we can make it an even better and more ethical tool, to help us.
